CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Democratic candidate Justin Kanew, who is running for Congress in Tennessee’s 7th District, has proposed a series of debates with Republican candidate Mark Green.
In a letter sent to Green and forwarded to members of the media, Kanew said he would like to engage in three debates with Green in multiple locations, including Williamson and Montgomery counties.
Kanew and Green are vying for the seat to be vacated by Rep. Marsha Blackburn, who is running for Bob Corker’s seat in the Senate.
It is unclear whether Green has responded to the request as of Monday afternoon.
You can read the full text of the letter below:
“Senator Green,
Congratulations on your nomination.
In the spirit of transparency and a healthy democratic process, the people of our district deserve to hear us debate about the issues facing our country and our communities in an open forum, face to face. This is the first time the seat has been open in 16 years, and the first time since 2002 there’s even been a competitive race, so hearing from us both is particularly important in this moment.
With that in mind, I hope you’ll join me in agreeing to a series of three debates in the days leading up to this November 6 election, in three mutually agreed upon locations throughout the district – including Williamson and Montgomery Counties – with mutually agreed upon moderators, sponsored by respected publications or universities.
If you’re in agreement that this is something we need to do, I’ll have my team reach out to yours to figure out dates and specifics.
Respectfully,
Justin Kanew
Democratic nominee for U.S. House of Representatives
Tennessee’s 7th District”
