CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – In observance of Community Helpers Week, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Canine Unit visited West Creek Elementary.
Four K-9 dogs, Leori, Fuse, Mallie and Merlin along with their handlers Sergeant Mike Oliver and Deputies Eric Trout, Kelly Potter and Chris Bedell addressed the kindergarten classes.
Deputies took 30 minutes with each class to demonstrate their partner’s ability to find and alert their handlers of an object, along with protection. At the end of each session, children were allowed to pet and interact with some of the dogs.
“The purpose of this presentation is to introduce children to law enforcement officers as well as the basic functions of the K-9 unit,” said West Creek School Resource Officer Jason Wright. “We hope this class will encourage a positive, lifelong community relationship with children and law enforcement.”
