CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – John “J.M.” Genis has announced he is running for election to the Montgomery County Commission, District 2.
Genis retired from the Army in 1995 as the law enforcement command sergeant major at Fort Campbell. He held various law enforcement positions with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and served as chief of police, Department of the Army Civilian Police, Fort Campbell.
He has taught full-time for the past 12 years as a senior instructor for the Criminal Justice Department at Austin Peay State University. He has a bachelor’s degree in Criminology/Criminal Justice, a Master of Education degree from the University of South Carolina and a Jurisprudence Doctoral Degree from the Nashville School of Law.
Genis served 11 years as the District 9 county commissioner prior to moving to the south side of the county. He served on the Emergency Medical Services, School Board, Parks and Recreation, Airport Authority, and Legislative Liaison committees.
“I originally wanted to be a commissioner to find out where every penny of our taxpayer money was being spent and, I was sure, wasted. Over the 11 years as District 9 commissioner, I worked through the mayors, department leaders to include county oversight committees and found where there was a wiser, cheaper method to accomplish their mission. Managers adopted recommendations and budget saving suggestions.
“I look forward to returning to continue the search for waste or any frivolous spending ideas and to support each county department as they provide the best service within their allotted budget.”
Genis is running as an independent in District 2, which covers parts of St. Bethlehem and Sango, on both sides of the Red River, and both sides of Interstate 24, stretching roughly from Dunbar Cave Road to the Memorial Drive area.
Genis and his wife, Phebe Bo Proctor-Genis, have a 13-year-old daughter, five grown children and five grandchildren.
