A healthy life starts before conception. Parental health and wellness prior to starting a family is very important. When childbearing aged women take vitamins containing folic acid prior to and during pregnancy the neurologic development of the baby is enhanced. Prenatal vitamins consumed during pregnancy provide additional assistance for the developing baby. Although obstetric care does not guarantee the birth of a perfect baby, they provide the best opportunity for health and wellness of the baby and mother throughout the pregnancy.
Upon delivery, the newborn will have its very first physical exam and wellness check. The next stop on the road to health and wellness is a series of Well-baby checks which are scheduled at 2-5 days of age and at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months. During these exams the proper physical, mental, and social development is assessed. Immunizations are also provided along with valuable information for the parents who partner with the doctor to observe the successful completion of developmental milestones. To optimize treatment options and maximize the chance of resolution, screening for autism is also conducted. We realize that the health of the “bundle of joy” is not limited to the doctor’s office so preparations will also need to be made at home.
Once the baby is in the home, the healthy lifestyle consists of a parental safety plan, proper nutrition, care and love. The guidance that is provided by caregivers to teach health and wellness will be very beneficial for many generations to come because it’s never too early to start a healthy lifestyle.
