CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Major road projects, including a widening of Interstate 24 from the Kentucky state line to Interstate 65, are at the top of local concerns as the state begins to consider its 2022 agenda.

Both Clarksville’s City Council and the Montgomery County Commission are asking the state delegation for a major expansion of I-24 as one of their top concerns going into the new fiscal year, through their 2022 Legislative Agenda, received by state lawmakers on Tuesday.

Montgomery County’s current state delegation includes Sen. Bill Powers and Reps. Curtis Johnson, Jay Reedy and Jason Hodges.

I-24 expansion

The first item on the agenda is improvements to I-24 from the Kentucky state line to I-65, approximately 50 miles of interstate, as part of Tennessee’s Improve Act.

The request also includes an extension to the truck lane on I-24 eastbound at Exit 11, extending out about 1,000 feet.

It also encourages the state to complete an extension of Highway 374 from Highway 79 to Highway 149, also called Lawrence Koontz Memorial Highway.

Other road projects requested

City and county officials called for continued support from the state on several road projects that are currently part of the state’s FY2023-26 Transportation Improvement Plan.

“We love orange barrels in Clarksville-Montgomery County, and the more of them we can get, the better,” Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts said Tuesday at the Legislative Agenda Reception.

Roads noted in the request include:

  • SR374/Warfield/Richview (from south of Dunbar Cave Road to SR 112/Madison Street)
  • SR237/Rossview Road (from west of Keysburg Road to SR37/Warfield Boulevard)
  • SR48/Trenton Road (from near SR374 to SR76/Exit 11)
  • SR12/US41A Bypass (from SR76/MLK Boulevard to SR13/Riverside Drive)

These projects are already underway and are in various stages of completion.
