WASHINGTON (AP) — Secret Service officers made a series of mistakes the night a Texas Army veteran carrying a knife entered the White House.
A summary of the Homeland Security review of the Sept. 19 incident was released Thursday night.
Officers chasing Omar Gonzales across the White House lawn figured they had him trapped when he made it to the thick bushes on the property.
Much to their surprise, the bushes were no match for Gonzalez. After clearing the shrubbery he dashed into the executive mansion through a pair of unlocked doors, knocking aside an officer physically too small to tackle him who would then fumble with her own equipment.
The first family was not home at the time.
