CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Big game hunters in Tennessee and Kentucky have waited several months since the conclusion of deer hunting season and they are now gearing up for the start of the spring turkey hunting season.

The Young Sportsman Hunt kicks off the 2014 spring hunting season for wild turkeys in Tennessee and will be held this Saturday, March 22 and Sunday, March 23.

The general spring turkey hunting season in Tennessee opens the following weekend on Saturday, March 29 and runs through Sunday, May 11.

The Spring Turkey Season at Ft. Campbell’s outdoor recreation area begins this Saturday, March 22 and runs through Sunday, May 4.

The youth only turkey hunt in Kentucky is held on Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6. The general spring turkey hunting season in Kentucky begins Saturday, April 12 and runs through Sunday, May 4.

The Young Sportsman Hunt gives the young hunters the first opportunities to bag gobblers before hunting pressured is applied. Youth hunters in Tennessee ages 6-16 are allowed to harvest one bearded turkey which counts toward the statewide bag limit, unless taken on a Wildlife Management Area where turkeys are designated as bonus birds.

Multiple youths may be accompanied by a non-hunting adult, 21 or older, who must remain in a position to take immediate control of the hunting device. The adult is not required to have a hunting license.

Legal turkey hunting equipment in Tennessee and Kentucky includes bows and shotguns using ammunition loaded with No. 4 shot or smaller. The hunting hours for turkey are 30 minutes before legal sunrise to legal sunset.
