CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Effective March 14, 2016, the use, possession, or storage of self-balancing scooters (hoverboards) are prohibited on APSU’s campus.

Austin Peay State University sent an email to students Friday explaining the recent change.

Recently, after dozens of fires involving self-balancing scooters, commonly known as “hoverboards,” the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) launched an investigation into the devices. An advisory has been issued to Manufacturers, Importers, and Retailers of Self-Balancing Scooters that such devices may pose an unreasonable risk of injuries and deaths associated with fires to consumers.

This investigation, coupled with national reports of fires and safety issues associated with such devices, “warrants a temporary ban of these products from APSU’s campus until they can be better studied and appropriate safety standards can be implemented”, according to the email.
