WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans are running into divisions over the new Congress’ first abortion bill.
Party leaders are searching for a way to advance the legislation without an embarrassing split over the issue.
The measure would ban virtually all abortions for pregnancies of 20 weeks or longer. It would allow for some exceptions, including for victims of rapes that have already been reported to authorities.
Some Republicans are upset over the requirement that the rape must be previously reported. The lawmakers say many women feel too distressed to report rapes — and these lawmakers say such women shouldn’t be penalized.
The problem came up Wednesday at a private meeting of House Republicans.
Afterward, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said discussions were underway and he expected the House to debate the bill Thursday.
