Battalion 1 firefighters arrived to heavy smoke and flames from the right side of the house. Thinking the residents were inside, they searched the home and found a small dog. They tried to save the dog, administering oxygen, but the dog died, Rios said.

The resident and her son returned home after firefighters arrived. They will be displaced, he said. The local chapter of the American Red Cross was called to assist the family.

The cause of the fire was under investigation Wednesday night.
