HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Alhambra Theatre marquee first brightened Hopkinsville’s Main Street on May 28, 1928, and is celebrating her 92nd birthday with a drive-through parde on Thursday, May 28 from 3 p.m.-6 p.m.
Opening just a year before the Great Depression, the historic landmark served as an invitation to be entertained and to share memorable experiences with friends and neighbors.
While the curtain may be temporarily closed, the same is still true. The community is encouraged to mark the occasion by reserving their concessions stand favorites for an at-home celebration.
Popcorn, candy, t-shirts, stickers, kids items and additional merchandise will be available to reserve online or at the pick-up line in front of the marquee at 507 South Main Street.
“We’re converting the space in front of the theatre where patrons would normally gather before a show to instead take a memento home with them in honor of the celebration,” says Margaret Prim, Executive Director of the Pennyroyal Arts Council.
“It is drive-through only,” Prim says, adding that those celebrating must all stay in their cars. Those attending the event will order, pay for and get their items from staff and volunteers through their car windows.
Since 1928, the Alhambra Theatre’s stage has been shared by vaudeville acts, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Marty Stuart, Coasters & Drifters, Hopkinsville’s community theatre group and high school drama students, and is slated to have its biggest and brightest season in the fall. Music by artists who have performed at the theatre will be playing on the outdoor speakers and a special drive-thru photo-op will be available on the day of the parade.
“We hope you’ll celebrate 92 years of magic with the Pennyroyal Arts Council by joining us May 28 in front of the theatre,” added Prim. For details on the event and to reserve your items, visit their Facebook page @alhambratheatrehopkinsville.
