HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Hopkinsville Police Department is now placing “bait” items throughout the city in order to catch thieves in the act of stealing, according to a press release from the department.

Bicycles, lawn mowers, and other various outdoor equipment have been placed in different locations throughout the city. Police are observing these items to see if a thief will take them.

Officers are also placing “bait” electronic devices, to include items such as phones and laptop computers, inside unlocked cars in parking lots and neighborhoods.

“It is the hope of the police department that by using these ‘bait’ items, it will help take these thieves off of our streets and help reduce crime in our community,” the release said.

HPD did not say whether any of these attempts have been successful so far.
