CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.- (CLARKSVILLENOW) This year, the 2018 scholarships in Montgomery County are awarded in honor of Delois Hogan.
In each market area, Heritage Bank awards the scholarships to the high school seniors in honor of a community member who has had an impact on education.
Delois began her career with the Montgomery County School System in the mid 1970’s as a substitute teacher, and later served as a teacher at Northwest High School and Greenwood Middle School. Among her many accomplishments, she has also served as a school counselor at Kenwood Middle School, and as the Clarksville Montgomery County Education Association’s Building Representative and Chief Contract Negotiator.
Ms. Hogan is also very involved in her community. For more than 30 years, she has devoted time volunteering in various organizations including as a board member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Centerstone. She is also a lifetime member of the NAACP. She has volunteered as a receptionist with the American Red Cross and has organized Voter Registration Drives.
Hogan says her greatest memory while teaching was her work with “Bears Helping Bears”, a mentoring program at Greenwood Middle School. Students in grades 6-8 discovered their strengths in different subject areas, and helped each other in areas they needed assistance. Hogan says, “In this program, the students learned that everyone has worth.”
Ms. Hogan uses one of her favorite quotes to express her passion for philanthropy and education: “From Congresswoman Shirley Chisolm: “Service is the rent we pay for living on this earth.””
Delois is currently retired and serving as vice-chair of her church deacon board. She also serves as Parliamentarian of the Clarksville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., among other committees.
