CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (Clarksvillenow.com) The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will hold its 24th annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive this Saturday, May 14. Letter carriers from across the country will collect non-perishable food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes.

It is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, and takes place each year on the second Saturday in May in 10,000 cities and towns all across America. Clarksville-Montgomery County residents are being asked to place a bag of donated food beside their mail boxes for letter carriers this Saturday.

In Montgomery County and estimated 29,310 people, including 11,060 children are considered food insecure. In Tennessee more than one million individuals face food insecurity while nationally, around 48 million Americans struggle with hunger. Food donated will go to Urban Ministries, Loaves & Fishes and the Salvation Army in Clarksville-Montgomery County.

Mike Chambless, Vice President of Branch 364 of the local NALC talked about the food drive. It’s hard enough for families in need to feed their children, but during the summer months when the children are out of school parents now have to provide breakfast and lunch that they would get in school for free. It’s a huge relief for them and helps get them through the summer months,” said Chambless.

In 2015 nearly 600,000 pounds of food was collected in Middle Tennessee from the “Stamp Out Hunger” campaign with over 71 million pounds collected across the country. To find out more about Stamp Out Hunger visit www.nalc.org.
