CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Northwest High football program is coming off a season where they narrowly missed the playoffs, and head coach Reynaldo Pena has the expectation for his team to be better.
The Vikings compiled a record of 3-7 during the 2022-23 season, which included the team losing their last three games. As the new season approaches, Northwest High football is also in the process of transitioning districts.
The Vikings joined the 6A Region 7 district, which includes inner-city opponents such as Clarksville High, Kenwood, Kirkwood, Northeast, Rossview and West Creek. Dickson County will also be in the district.
Pena expects his team to separate themselves from the rest of their district with their physicality.
“Our physically has stood out,” Pena said. “We’ve been firmly trying to be more aggressive and physical based off our big guys up front. They are the heart, soul and foundation of our team right now. They dictate our physicality, along with our linebackers.”
Pena said coming into the year, he thought his team’s depth at linebacker would be thin. However, he said they have some guys who came in, and some returners, who have stepped up.
Pena also complimented his offensive line for the work they’ve put in this off-season. He said that they are going into their third year playing alongside each other, and they know each other and their mannerisms.
The Vikings expect Braeden Ellis to start under center for the team to begin the year, according to Pena. He said that Ellis will not only lead the team but will dictate the pace of play. Pena said he’s proud of his quarterback’s development. He added Ellis will be surrounded by young wide receivers who have showcased their production going into the new year.
Offensive and defensive philosophy
Another thing that has stood out to Pena is his players intelligence.
“The biggest thing about this team is that these young men are brilliant,” Pena said. “With me taking over as the signal caller on defense, I can manipulate a lot of things because of how smart they are and how quick they understand the defense.”
With that being said, Pena wants his defense to be built around toughness and that starts with their team captains.
As for the Vikings offense, Pena said it will be based around a balanced approach with their ability to execute their running game. The head coach expects their rushing attack to be good, which should open up opportunities to throw the ball down the field.
