CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Rossview head coach Todd Hood mentioned at this year’s preseason high school football luncheon during his speech that the senior motto for this year’s Hawks team is to, “Face everything, fear nothing”.
Hood gave some insight on where that mentality originated from and what it exactly means to his players.
“That’s the motto the team came up with at the beginning of the summer,” Hood said. “I think that means to them that any obstacle or diversion that stands in front of us, we must face and conquer. Through all the adversity and tough times, we must fear nothing or no one.”
The Hawks currently have a large junior class and incoming freshman class including 37 new faces. Hood discussed some of the players he believes could have a coming-out party in 2019.
“We have a few players that really need a break out year for us to succeed,” Hood said. “One is Aaron Bolster at wide receiver. He has all the tools but little game experience. Senior Ashon Davis is another player that needs to take his game to the next level. I’m really hoping that our offensive line with Jeremy Crabbe, Camron Everitt, Jackson Brown, Coleman Wood, Paul Pearson, Seth Clayton, and Nik Varytimidis will step their play up to a high level. My staff has worked extremely hard over the winter to improve on our assignments, technique, and our knowledge of the game. I’m hoping to see those benefits sooner than later.”
Transfer quarterback Gabe Sibert was deemed eligible to play in recent weeks for the Hawks and took to the gridiron this past Friday against LaVergne. The senior went 14-of-20 passing with 216 yards and two touchdowns.
“Gabe seems to be learning the offense quickly,” Hood said. “He is out of shape, which you would expect from not playing for so long, but in 6A you need two quarterbacks. Gabe and Brock (Rowland) support each other in practice because in the long run we are trying to win football games. Gabe is very athletic and throws a good ball. I think with more practice time he will see the field more often.”
Rossview faces a bit of a gauntlet this year with the opposing teams in front of them on the docket.
“Our schedule is tough but we expect to win every game we play,” Hood said. “In order to do that, we must improve in some areas to be successful this season. Practice habits, knowledge, and execution are vital.”
In the offseason, Hood brought in soldiers from the Army during the summer to meet with his team and says that he has already seen the positive impact it’s had on the locker room as a whole.
“That was a neat thing to do,” Hood said. “I love to bring outside people in to assist or reinforce what we teach here at Rossview. That is team first and love your brother more than yourself. The Army was great. They took our team through an obstacle course then instilled that part to the team. They discussed many issues and life lessons that they can take with them for years to come.”
Rossview (1-1) will host Wilson Central in its home opener Friday, Sept. 6.
