The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) released its “Tennessee Hate Crime 2013” report Tuesday, May 20, 2014.
The annual study compiles statistics reported by the state’s law enforcement agencies to the Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System (TIBRS).
Among the report’s findings:
-Ethnicity/National Origin victim offenses nearly tripled from 25 victims in 2012 to 96 victims in 2013.
-Simple Assault was the most frequently reported bias motivated offense in 2013, with 125 occurrences.
-In 2013, the number of Damage/Destruction/Vandalism hate crime offenses increased 27.9% from the previous year.
-75 victims and 76 offenders of hate crimes in 2013 were juveniles.
-The most frequently documented Sexual Bias was Anti-Homosexual (Gays & Lesbians), accounting for 38.3% of all Sexual Biases in 2013.
The following are hate crime statistics for the Clarksville Police Department:
-Anti- Not Hispanic or Latino Bias: 2 aggravated assault victims, 2 simple assault victims
-Anti- Not Hispanic or Latino Bias: 2 destruction/damage/vandalism victims
-Anti-Physical Disability Bias: 1 simple assault victim
-Anti-Homosexual (Gays and Lesbians) Bias: 4 intimidation victims
– Anti-Homosexual (Gays and Lesbians) Bias: 1 destruction/damage/vandalism victim
“We have no place in our communities for hate crimes,” said TBI Director Mark Gwyn. “We sincerely hope all law enforcement departments – and communities – will use this information to spark some honest conversation about how best to combat this type of crime and make our state a safer place for all Tennesseans.”
