NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Gov. Bill Haslam, Commander-In-Chief of the Tennessee Military Department, has proclaimed April as the Month of the Military Child.

In 1986, Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger designated April as Month of the Military Child to recognize military children for their personal sacrifices to the Armed Forces. Gov. Haslam has continued to honor that commitment during his time in office.

“Tennessee is home to over 40,000 military children. They reside in our communities, classrooms, and churches. Our military kids may not be easy to identify because they do not wear the uniform each day, but they serve, too. We are honored to help recognize them,” said Paige Major, Tennessee National Guard Child and Youth Program coordinator.

This April, several organizations are coming together to provide special events for military-connected children in Tennessee. These partnerships include Tennessee National Guard Child and Youth Program, American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces, Knox Co. Council PTA, University of Tennessee Athletics, University of Tennessee Extension Institute of Agriculture, East Tennessee Military Affairs Council, Bristol Motor Speedway and Military OneSource.

Military-connected children and their families can attend sporting events, local zoos and museums, and even visit the home of country artist John Rich through these partnerships during the month of April.
