CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – How are you celebrating Father’s Day? What did you buy for your father? Do you spend as much on Father’s Day as you do on Mother’s Day? And finally, do you know the origin of Father’s Day?

Father’s Day is said to have been started by a church in West Virginia in 1908, in memory of 362 men who had died in an explosion at a coal mine. Then in in 1910, Washington State celebrated the first statewide Father’s Day after Sonora smart Dodd campaigned to have an equivalent to Mother’s Day.

Over the years there has been controversy over the commercialism of Mother’s Day and Father’s day, even to the point of trying to scrap both holidays and having one day called “Parent’s Day”.

Finally, In 1972, Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts.

So, how much did you spend?

Happy Father’s Day to all the men of our community who, whether biologically or through their presence is considered someone’s father.
