CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Even the rain Tuesday morning couldn’t dampen the spirits of Sherry Elliott or her friends who came out to be a part of the groundbreaking ceremony for Elliott’s new home with Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County.
The ceremony took place on Richardson Street as Elliott, Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts, Clarksville Fire Rescue Chief Freddie Montgomery, several from the Spreading Our Support (S.O.S.) Foundation, and members of the Habitat for Humanity board, staff and supporters, all with smiles on their faces, dug into the ground with their golden shovels.
The home for Elliott was made possible in part through the Clarksville Association of Realtors Spreading our Support (S.O.S.) Foundation. A grant approval of $60,000 to Habitat will go towards a partnership with Clarksville Fire Rescue to fund the home build. Volunteer firefighters will also be helping build the home. Assistance also came from the Clarksville Office of Housing and Community Development.
“I am just so excited and so relieved this day finally came and with the Clarksville Fire Rescue team helping to build it, I feel really safe. I can’t wait to start working on it and getting it built and get moved in,” Elliott said.
When finished, it will be the 99th home to be built by Habitat in Montgomery County.
Habitat for Humanity President, Kevin Underwood, said this is the first build of the year and there are eight other families in the program and some will have their homes started this year.
