CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) As a large crowd looked on, Montgomery County officials broke ground Tuesday on the new Civic Plaza in downtown Clarksville. The site is the location of the former Bank of America building and covers the square block area of 2nd, Legion, 3rd and Main Streets.
Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett talked about some of the features of the new Civic Plaza. “It’s exciting, It’s going to have green space, a water feature, flower gardens, it’s going to have a stage, some great seating areas and places for kids to play. It’s just an awesome place right in the middle of our downtown,” said Durrett.
Durrett added that work has already begun on the utilities and agreement has been reached with the contractor on the price so we’re ready to sign the contract. He said depending on the weather and how construction goes the Civic Plaza should be ready for everyone to enjoy in the fall of next year, if not sooner.
Durrett praised members of the Montgomery County Commission and Clarksville City Council for their vision to approve the construction of the Civic Plaza. President of Austin Peay State University, Alissa White, was one of the speakers and talked about the relationship of nearby APSU with the community.
“I’m grateful for the relationship Austin Peay has with our city, our county and our region. We have a lot of support from you and we offer that support in return,” said White. She also thanked Mayor Durrett for helping to make the Civic Plaza a reality and a place to gather, play, listen, watch and enjoy.
