CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Greenwood Cemetery was one of an estimated 3,130  locations nationwide that participated in the National Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, December 18 with more than 4.2 million wreaths placed on the graves of fallen veterans.

It was the first time that Greenwood has participated in the national event, with close to 50 volunteers placing more than 155 wreaths on the graves of veterans in the cemetery.

Founded in 2007, the mission of the nonprofit Wreaths Across America is to remember the fallen, honor those who serve and their families, and teach future generations the value of freedom.

Office manager for Greenwood Cemetery Dana Koverman joined others in placing wreaths on grave sites. “Today we are honoring the veterans past, present and future, laying wreaths for those who have served and gave their life for our country and to protect our freedom.” Koverman said.

Koverman added that family members of veterans and volunteers have purchased wreaths and came out to lay the wreaths to honor veterans. Scouts with Clarksville BSA Troop 514 also helped place wreaths on veterans’ graves. The goal for Greenwood Cemetery is to raise enough funds next year to place wreaths on the graves of all of the close to 1,600 local heroes laid to rest at the cemetery.
