CLARKSVILLE, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Greenwood Cemetery recently reached a milestone in the construction of their new VA Memorial. A large flagpole has been installed in the center of the Memorial’s location.

The new memorial will be dedicated to one of Clarksville’s most decorated veterans buried at Greenwood and to all our country’s military and first responders.

Greenwood hopes the new memorial will provide a space for local veteran groups to host ceremonies as well as provide a peaceful location for veterans to visit.

“We have a lot of veterans buried here in Greenwood from every war back to 1872, and of course we have Fort Campbell here. Our managing trustee, Mr. Paul Schaaf, was in the army during the Vietnam War. It is something he has always had needling around. He just finally said, ya know what, we have the space to do this, and started pulling everybody together,” said Greenwood Cemetery office manager Dana Koverman.

Local and veteran-owned businesses have partnered with Greenwood to make the memorial a reality, including Hollis and Hollis Trucking, who donated gravel, Screaming Eagle, who supplied concrete for the sidewalk, and Jeff Perry who helped pave it.

“We are very grateful to the community for stepping up and making this a joint project to honor those who protect us,” said Koverman.

The next step in the project is to add four parking spaces to the location and to ensure the sidewalk is fully handicap accessible.

Greenwood Cemetery hopes to hold an unveiling ceremony for the completed project in the fall, though a date has not been set at this time.
