CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) Over 400 volunteers took to the streets and roads of Clarksville-Montgomery County Saturday to do their part in this year’s Great American Clean-up event.
The work spread all across the community from the industrial park to downtown. The clean-up is promoted through the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce and organized through Bi-County Solid Waste.
Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett kicked off the event downtown at the courthouse.
“Our new state litter motto is Nobody Trashes Tennessee,” said Durrett. He asked the volunteers to tell people that the next time you see someone littering. He also thanked all of the volunteers for coming out to help.
Mary Anderson, Bi-County Assistant Director of Administration and Education, and coordinator of the event said the participation for the event was fantastic this year. When she found out more than 400 people had signed up, Keep TN Beautiful Coordinator Stine Moss-Copperwood said she drove up from Memphis to witness such great community spirit.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation spends more than $15 million each year to clean up litter on the state’s roads.
Even though the Great American Clean-up day has passed anyone interested in cleaning up a specific area of the community can contact Anderson, who will supply gloves and trash bags through litter grant funds. Contact Anderson at mcanderson@mcgtn.net so that work can be added to the database which helps the community secure grants for litter and recycling efforts.
