CLARKSVILLE – Austin Peay State University baseball head coach Gary McClure announced Wednesday he has withdrawn his name from consideration for the head coaching position at Iowa.
“It was an honor to be involved in the process at Iowa,” said McClure. “Having grown up in Iowa and with family still in the state it was a situation I found appealing. However, I believe there is more to be accomplished at Austin Peay.
“I want our fans to know I’m happy as the baseball coach at Austin Peay. Our entire coaching staff has worked to make Austin Peay baseball one of the nation’s best programs and we will continue those efforts.”
McClure finished 2013 with a 799-691-4 record in his 26 seasons at Austin Peay – the only head coaching position he has held. He led the Governors to a program-record 47 wins and reached the Bloomington Regional finals – the second consecutive year APSU has reached the regional final. McClure is Austin Peay and the Ohio Valley Conference’s all-time wins leader.
“We are honored to have Gary McClure a part of Austin Peay,” APSU Athletics Director Derek van der Merwe said. “We look forward to him being a big part of our future.”
