CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – For women and children in need, there is a place they can turn in our community for support, an organization known as Serenity House, that offers help and caring in the form of transitional housing and services to homeless women and children.
Founder and CEO of Serenity House, Dr. Toi Dennis, said they have a program involving permanent housing where they pay the first months rent, deposit and electricity, as well as case management and counseling.
The organization serves both women with children and individual women. There are also income requirements from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that must be met to receive services.
“The goal is to have the mother or the woman to have at least 30 days on her job, so we’re looking at two pay stubs, and to make sure where ever we’re placing her she is able to maintain and keep up with the rent once we help her get into her permanent housing,” said Dennis.
Serenity House also partners with other local non-profit organizations to help those in need in the community. Dennis said that the goal is that no one should be on the streets and for those who are seeking help, and want help, we can give them that help.
Dennis said growing up there were some challenges because her mother was a single parent and there were those who helped her family. She added she has always had a passion for working with people and that is what guided her to open Serenity House and be able to give back to the community.
When it comes to showing support for Serenity House by the community Dr. Dennis said primarily they are in need of financial support.
“It costs money to help provide services for the women and children. We get clothing and household items all the time, we have plenty of that. We’re definitely in need of funding, it takes money to help pay for rent, electricity, and water to help these women find the stability they need,” said Dennis
