CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) Since 1992 Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County has been building homes for families in our community. Erica Outlaw, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity, says over the past 25 years 94 homes have been built in the county.
In 2018 Outlaw said they are committed to building four new homes for families this year. She said one of the biggest needs they have right now are more volunteers from the community to help with the different aspects of the organization.
Habitat for Humanity emphasizes they do not give homes away and believe in giving people a hand up, not a hand out. They do that by partnering with families in need who are willing to provide sweat equity, or personal volunteer work, and have the ability to repay a zero-interest mortgage.
“We are looking for more people to help accomplish our mission, more volunteers that can help staff our committees and we’re also looking for people who can work on our homes who maybe have a skill for building,” said Outlaw.
Along with volunteers, the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity relies on donors and sponsors to provide the funds necessary to buy needed supplies and tools to build a home, not just a house, to enrich a family’s life.
The Habitat ReStore is another important part of the organization’s service to the community. The ReStore is located at the Habitat for Humanity office, 404 Madison St. and accepts gently used items like building supplies, furniture, appliances, housewares and home décor.
The donated items are sold to the public in the ReStore with money raised going to support the nonprofit’s work in the community. You can call 931-645-4242 or email donate@clarksvillerestore.org to have items picked up or just drop them off at the ReStore.
“The ReStore is currently under new management, we have a whole new staff and I feel we have better quality items for our customers and I’m inviting everyone to come in and give us a second look,” Outlaw said, adding there are also many volunteer opportunities at the ReStore.
