CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Without a doubt one of the most important resources for our community is the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library and the library relies in part on a group of citizens known as the Friends of the Library for their support.

This edition of Giving Grace salutes Friends of the Library, a nonprofit organization established in 1974 which at this time has close to 320 members.  President Jennifer Ford said there are a number of ways they actively support the library through fundraising and volunteering.

One of the most popular fundraising events is the bi-annual used book sale which takes place in the spring and fall.  Unfortunately, the 2020 spring sale was cancelled over concerns of COVID-19. Ford added they are keeping their fingers crossed that they will be able to hold the sale in the fall.

Another fundraiser is through the purchase of canvas tote bags with the library logo on them that sell for $6 and can be found at the circulation desk at the library.

Friends of the Library support programs like the Children’s Summer Reading Program, Adult Summer Reading Program, along with the Harry Potter and Sci-Fi events.  They also help with getting magicians, story tellers, live animal presentations and prizes for special activities.

“By helping to support these programs we are providing things for children and adults in the community to come and do that are free,” Ford said.

“We’re able to help the library with discretionary funds and staff support for training and celebrations. Last year we helped with purchasing a popcorn maker and supplies for the sensory friendly movie night for children who are on the Autism spectrum or who are sensitive to sensory overload,” said Ford.

Ford added that the friends also help maintain the aquarium in the children’s room of the library and they are also supporting plans for the North Branch of the library.

Membership as a friend of the library includes having first choice of books available at the used book sale, receiving a quarterly newsletter, and Ford said members have the opportunity to become a part of citizens dedicated to the growth of the public library which benefits the community.

“As a member of the friends your voice joins others in speaking up for the library and making sure its needs aren’t overlooked,” Ford said.
