WASHINGTON, D.C. – Gen. John F. Campbell took command of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan Tuesday, August 26, according to a release from the Department of Defense.
Campbell will take the place of Gen. Joe Dunford, who will become the 36th Commandant of the Marine Corps.
Gen. Campbell was the Army’s vice chief of staff and former commanding general for the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell. This will be his third tour of duty in Afghanistan.
“John’s leadership comes at a defining moment, as Afghanistan undertakes a historic political transition, and the United States and our coalition partners transition from combat to training and support for Afghan forces,” said Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.
“President Obama and I have the highest confidence in John, and we look forward to working closely with him in the months ahead.”
