CLARKSVILLE, TN – Gateway Chamber Orchestra announces a landmark performance of Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov’s work, La Pasión según San Marcos (St. Mark Passion) at The George and Sharon Mabry Hall, located on the Austin Peay State University campus. Performances will be held Saturday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, March 20, at 4 p.m.
Music Director Gregory Wolynec says, “Golijov’s masterpiece for chorus, orchestra, an amazing assortment of percussion, vocal soloists, and dancers is one of the most important works of the last 50 years, and it represents our most ambitious undertaking – ever! Join us for this inspirational performance; it’s a captivating blending of cultures, supported by an all-star cast.”
This multi-cultural response to Bach’s St. Matthew Passion combines tango, salsa music, and African drumming into an entirely new telling of the Passion story. The sensational premiere received a 25 minute standing ovation by people who were enthralled by this Latin American retelling of the Passion story. Alex Ross of The New Yorker said it “It drops like a bomb on the belief that classical music is an exclusively European art.”
GCO’s production features Reynaldo Gonzalez-Fernandez, who premiered the title role, and Mikael Ringquist, who created much of the drumming music. To date, the work has only been presented in major cultural centers such as New York, Boston and Los Angeles.
