CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Gateway Chamber Orchestra presents the 2016-17 Opening Concert: Celebrating Musical Treasures, Sunday, September 25, at 4 p.m. in the George & Sharon Mabry Concert Hall at Austin Peay State University.

Tickets for individual concerts are on sale now and can be ordered via phone at (931) 444-6240 or online at www.gatewaychamberorchestra.com.

Drawing inspiration from influences that shape our communities and mold character, the GCO explores the defining role music plays, beginning with Conni Ellisor’s Blackberry Winter showcasing Stephen Seifert, an outstanding dulcimer soloist. Critics say, “For those looking for an orchestral sound that is uniquely American… Conni Ellisor provides the sound.”

Conni Ellisor says, “When first asked if I would be interested in writing a concerto for dulcimer and strings, I happily agreed because of the challenge of juxtaposing and blending musical styles and idioms has always been of interest to me. In this case the peculiar beauty and eccentricities of the mountain dulcimer, with its diatonic tuning and drone strings, and the rich heritage of the classical concerto with string orchestra seemed particularly compelling.”

Continuing the trend of spectacular music, the GCO also performs music from EMMY-nominated composer Kareem Roustom and concludes with Mozart’s revolutionary “Jupiter” Symphony, his last symphony.
