PADUCAH, Ky. – A Fort Campbell woman has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to wanton child abuse, according to a release from David J. Hale, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky.
The release states that Shanika D’June Pickens (aka Shanika Campbell), 28, pleaded guilty to charges saying she failed to provide the child with professional medical attention for burns, as well as adequate food and nutrition. The child was under 12 years of age at the time.
Campbell had custody of her three children, including the victim, while living at Fort Campbell. Between January 1, 2011 and September 30, 2011 the victim received burns to his right side and back areas. Campbell admits she was aware of the burns and did not seek professional medical attention that was available at Ft. Campbell for her family.
Between October 1, 2011 and January 30, 2012, Campbell failed to provide adequate food and nutrition, which resulted in his hospitalization at Vanderbilt University Hospital where he was diagnosed with malnutrition.
If convicted at trial, Campbell faces a sentence of no more than 10 years in prison, a fine of $500,000 and a three year period of supervised release.
Campbell is scheduled for sentencing before Senior U.S. District Judge Thomas B. Russell on November 13, 2014, in Paducah.
