FAIRVIEW, Tenn. – Fairview High School in Williamson County, southwest of Nashville, crowned a new homecoming king, WKRN News 2 reports.
An honor that usually goes to the most popular guy in school, Monday night was no exception.
Matthew Shaver was the clear choice for many students at Fairview, but he had no idea.
“I’m going to act surprised, shake his hand. He’s going to be speechless, I don’t know what he’ll say,” student Jeremy Hutcherson told News 2.
The Coming Home King, what the school calls the honor during basketball season, is given to the student who raises the most money for the school’s Memorial Fund.
The Memorial Fund contains scholarship money raised every year in honor of Fairview students who have passed away.
So how did students make it so that Matthew won?
Hutcherson, Dreshad Moore, and Trevin Beique worked together to make it happen.
“We decided as a group to combine the funds we raised and add it to Matthew’s funds, so he would get homecoming king,” student Trevin Beique said.
During the ceremony, Matthew was escorted by not one, but two lovely ladies.
“I really love Matthew. I’m so glad they asked me to do this,” said Lexie Sullivan.
“It’s an honor to be his escort. I wouldn’t want anyone else,” Bailey Jones added.
The rally at the game was all for Matthew. The crowd cheered, the new king made a speech, and everybody danced to his favorite song—”I Like to Move It” by Reel 2 Real.
