NASHVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) — United Way of Metropolitan Nashville and partner agencies have launched the 15th annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)free tax prep program.
IRS-certified volunteers offer free tax preparation services to individuals and families who earned $66,000 or less per household in 2018, helping qualifying individuals receive important credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Child Tax Credit (CTC) that lift millions out of poverty each year.
Now through April 15, United Way is partnering to operate 26 VITA sites throughout Middle Tennessee, including one location in Montgomery County and one location in Dickson County:
• Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library, 350 Pageant Lane, Ste. 501, Clarksville, TN; Opens Feb. 8. Walk-in only. Thur: 2 to 6 p.m.; Fri, Sat: 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• First Baptist Church, 2501 Hwy 70 E., Dickson, TN; Opens Jan. 26. Appointment required: 615-446-4640. Mon: 2:30 to 8 p.m.; Sat: 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Closed Saturday before Easter.
Taxpayers may also file online at UnitedWayFileFree.com. Last year, the average taxpayer spent $273 to file returns at paid tax service providers. In 2018, VITA volunteers completed 14,390 returns, helping taxpayers save more than $3.9 million in tax preparation fees and bringing more than $17.7 million in federal refunds back to the community.
“The VITA free tax prep program helps thousands of individuals save by keeping their full tax return in their pockets,” said Brian Hassett, president and CEO of United Way of Metropolitan Nashville. “Thanks to our dedicated group of volunteers, VITA partnerships ensure that the hard-working members of our community are able to use their income for essentials like putting food on the table and transportation.”
Residents can find the nearest VITA site in their community and more information about the program by visiting UnitedWayFileFree.com or through United Way’s 2-1-1 Helpline by texting their ZIP code to 898211.
