CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Children and teens from ages 5-18 can unleash their creativity and curiosity with free coding workshops at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library.
The Clarksville Game Design Club has two separate groups that meet at the Library—the Game Design Club for ages 10-18 and the Junior Coder’s Club for ages 5-9. Each group meets every other Saturday at the Library in the upstairs computer lab.
Bridget Cloud, the project creator and instructor, is a teacher for the Northeast Academy of Computer Programming and Game Development and earned her bachelor’s degree in computer science from APSU in 2013. Ms. Cloud has a passion for teaching and computers and is combining the two by spending her Saturdays volunteering at the Library to teach computer coding and game creation to kids.
According to Assistant Director Annie Herlocker, “Bridget came to us with her idea to create a coding club that would meet on Saturdays where she could teach coding and gaming concepts to kids in a fun and hands on environment. She and her teaching partner, Robert Doyle, created an interactive website and are doing all the teaching and lesson planning. Partnering with Bridget on this project has been a dream and we are excited to see how this program grows.”
According to Bridget Cloud, “The purpose of this project is to introduce children to the concept of programming. By learning to create games, children learn to think logically. They learn communication skills by working in teams, as this is how games are developed. And they learn confidence by creating something they can be proud of.”
Registration is not required, but encouraged. Register online and learn more about the program at http://clarksvillegamedesign.net/about/.
