CLARKSVILLE, TN – Clarksville Parks & Recreation will host its annual Civil War medical display from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 29, at Fort Defiance Civil War Park and Interpretive Center.
The fort, which overlooks the confluence of the Red and Cumberland rivers, was a cornerstone of the Confederate defense of the area and an important part of the Union’s occupation of Clarksville.
This free, educational event is open to the public. Mark Britton, president of the Friends of Fort Defiance organization, annually provides a display of 19th-century medical instruments and medicines and discusses with visitors how they were used during the Civil War.
“Mark Britton will be displaying a fine assortment of 19th-century medical instruments, tinctures and remedies from his personal collection,” said William Parker, a historical interpreter at Fort Defiance. “This is a unique opportunity to not only see these rare items but also have somebody to explain their purpose.”
