FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – A Fort Campbell soldier has died in Afghanistan, in an incident that’s under investigation.

On Monday, the Department of Defense announced the death of 1st Lt. Joseph Trent Allbaugh, 24, from Folsom, California. He died as the result of a non-combat incident on July 12 in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation, according to a news release.

Allbaugh was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 108th ADA Brigade, Fort Campbell, in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

“The loss of 1st Lt. Joseph Allbaugh is devastating for everyone,” said Col. Charles Matallana, the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade commander. “On behalf of the 108th ADA Brigade, I want to extend our deepest condolences. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and fellow soldiers. We are with them during this incredibly painful time.”

Allbaugh was born in Folsom, California, to Larry and Laura Allbaugh on Dec. 21, 1995. He attended Vanguard University of Southern California and graduated in 2018 with a degree in psychology. Shortly after graduating, Allbaugh was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps as an Army Air Defense Artillery Officer and married his wife, Ashley Allbaugh of Placerville, California.

After attending the Basic Officer’s Leader Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Allbaugh was assigned to Alpha Battery, 2d Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment at Fort Campbell in February of 2019. During his time there, he served as a Platoon Leader and an Engagement Operations Cell Battle Captain in support of Operation Freedom Sentinel in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Allbaugh’s awards include the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.
