FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The annual Independence Day Celebration on Fort Campbell has been cancelled. Fort Campbell leadership announced the decision during a recent virtual town hall meeting.
Each year the event features a carnival, concert, and fireworks that are not only open to military and their families, but also to the communities surrounding Fort Campbell.
“I don’t think we’re going to be at the conditions to do a traditional Fourth of July celebration,” said Major General Brian Winski, Commanding General of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and Fort Campbell. There has always been a carnival, concert, generally about 8,000 people in attendance.
Post officials are looking for an alternate date and time to hold a celebration. Timing is difficult with trainings and deployments, however leadership is leaning towards a date in the fall. “We’re thinking about August, but are more inclined to go with a fall festival type of thing, maybe in October,” he said.
The cancellation was made after assessing the potential threats of COVID-19 on such a large gathering.
