CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Kenwood girls basketball hosted Northeast Tuesday to begin District 10-AAA play.

The Knights jumped out to an early lead, but the Lady Eagles responded by outscoring Kenwood 14-6 in the second quarter. Superb ball movement led to easy baskets in a 52-43 road win for Northeast.

Kahlia Flowers had a big game for the Lady Eagles offensively, as the junior scored 12 of Northeast’s first 16 points of the contest.

“I loved her effort,” said Tracie Mason-Blair, Northeast girls basketball coach. “She picked us up, kept us in the game and we congratulated her on that. She came out ready to play, kept getting everybody to rally around her, and was my leader tonight.”

Sophomore Krysonie Mitchell chipped in eight points and was a strong presence inside for Northeast throughout. Mason-Blair said Mitchell will be play a vital role in being able to help combat her team’s lack of size this season.

“We have to get her stronger,” Mason-Blair said. “I told you we were small the beginning of the year. Hopefully she will continue to develop as a post presence for us.”

Kenwood’s Dantesha Brandt got things started by hitting a corner three, helping the Knights take a 13-10 lead into the second quarter.

Northeast battled back and later extended its lead to 42-31 after through three quarters of play.

In the fourth quarter, the Knights chipped into the deficit, but a jumper through contact by Flowers with 2:40 remaining erased any shot of a Kenwood comeback.

Northeast (2-1, 1-0) will have a week off before hosting Northwest in another District 10-AAA matchup Tuesday, Dec. 3.

“First of all, get some rest,” Mason-Blair said on the message to her team over the break. “That’s my goal is to keep everyone healthy. Then we have to come back focused and ready to go. We’ll work on what we do and keep getting better at it.”

Kenwood Lady Knights was led in scoring by Amaya Holmes with 12 points.  Kenwood will host Hillsboro Friday, Nov. 29 in the Kenwood Hoops Classic.
