CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – A number of Families filled The Gilroy Neighborhood Pub on University Avenue Tuesday, December 23 for the first of two Christmas in Clarksville events hosted by Flourishing Families along with Serenity House Women’s Shelter.
Both children and adults joined in the holiday spirit as they enjoyed food, music, gifts and a visit from Santa Claus. There was also warm clothing available for those in need. The second Christmas in Clarksville is scheduled for Christmas day from 10:30 a.m.-Noon at Loaves and Fishes, 215 Foster Street.
Flourishing Families is a nonprofit organization in Clarksville, founded by sisters Calendra Blanks and Canadra Jenkins, that helps homeless and low income people with career services, financial advice, childcare, educational services, transportation, shelter and counseling.
Jenkins talked about the event which she said was an idea of a co-worker. “The original idea was to make sure we have enough clothes, coats, hats and shoes to give to everybody. Then we decided to bring in some food to make sure everybody was eating as well,” said Jenkins.
There were over two dozen volunteers who helped with the festivities along with members of The Gilroy staff. Flourishing Families was expecting up to 140 people who were in need over the holidays to make their way through The Gilroy.
Jenkins added that she wanted to thank the local community as well as The Gilroy, Belk, Don Pancho, Family Dollar, Firehouse Subs, Plato’s Closet, Michael’s Pizza, Walmart and Sam’s Club for their support of Christmas in Clarksville.
