CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Fireworks are fun for many of us, but can be very distressing to pets, especially dogs.
Experts say cats and dogs respond differently to loud noises. Cats will hide and wait it out, while dogs are more likely to run away until the loud noises stop.
Pets should be kept indoors as much as possible over the next few days.
“We all know that animals have a keener sense of hearing than people do,” said Tim Clifton, Director of Montgomery County Animal Control. “It’s pretty scary to those animals. I just hope people take that into consideration and try to get away from the housing areas where the animals are.”
Animal Control stays busy this time of year, since many pets tend to run away from the noises.
Clifton said if pets must be outside, they should be micro-chipped, or at the very least have identification tags.
“If they do get away from you, call us. Hopefully we’ll have the animal and you can come down here and reclaim it,” he said.
