CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The scholarship offers have continued to pour in for Northwest High girls basketball standout Ta’Mia Scott, who is now up to 13 total.

The 6-foot-1 combo guard helped lead the Lady Vikings to their first district title since 2002-03 this past season, averaging 20.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game in her junior campaign.

Colleges from leagues such as the Ohio Valley, Sun Belt, Southern, Southwestern Atlantic, Big South, ASUN, Conference USA and the American Athletic Conference have all taken notice of Scott’s rare talent and tireless work ethic.

“It’s relieving I would say,” Scott said of the offers. “I’ve put in so many hours training every day. Early mornings and late nights. I would say my recruiting started off slower than I would’ve hoped especially with COVID, but it’s definitely picking up now and I’m happy about that.”

Glimpse into the future

Scott has even received an offer from her hometown school Austin Peay State University, and she made an unofficial visit there Monday to meet with new head women’s basketball coach Brittany Young and the rest of the Governor staff.

“There is an assistant coach at Austin Peay now (Eryc Pittman) who came from Jacksonville State and was actually recruiting me there,” Scott said. “We have a great relationship. … It was really good to see all of the coaches in person. We got to see most of the buildings and talked about what I would major in. I also got to meet the team and watch them practice.”

Last week, Scott attended a team camp at Middle Tennessee State University and was able to learn more about the school that offered her a scholarship back in April.

“The good part about it was that I did meet the coaching staff and I love them,” Scott said. “They are connected to my AAU team Flight. I didn’t get to see the entire campus, but I did see inside the gym. It was nice.”

The Lady Vikings saw their 2020-21 season come to an end at the hands of Lebanon in the Region 5 title game. Ironically enough, Scott has played AAU ball for TN Flight Silver over the past two summers, which is also led by Lady Blue Devils coach Cory Barrett.

“It’s kind of weird because they are one of our rivals in high school,” Scott said. “It’s really good experience though getting to play with other experienced players like that. I think it’s definitely good for me.”

Honor-roll student

When it comes to being a student athlete, it can oftentimes be difficult for one to excel in both their respected sport and in the classroom. This is far from the case for Scott, who is thankful that doing well in school comes fairly natural for herself.

“School is not that hard for me,” Scott said. “I get my work done and have never really struggled. When basketball season comes, I have less time for a lot of that, but I get most of my work done during class time. My grades have always been good.”

Hard work pays off

One of Scott’s all-time favorite moments on a basketball floor to this point in her career took place in February when she became a member of Northwest’s 1,000-point scorer’s club.

“It was really exciting,” Scott said. “I didn’t even know I was close to it at first. We also won the game where I was awarded my ball. I got a lot of love from hitting that milestone.”

Scott is appreciative of those who continue to reach out in different ways, offering kind words and congratulatory messages on her successes thus far.

“Over the years, I’ve gotten so much love and support even from people that I play against and their families,” Scott said. “It means a lot to me. I’ve always gotten a lot of love because I have such a huge family, but now it’s been so many others from around the city and even out of state. It just means a lot.”

Not done yet

As she gets set to enter her senior season, Scott is focused on improving in all facets.

“Especially in high school ball, I want to play how I need to play for the next level,” Scott said. “It’s a whole new ballgame in college. Team wise, I want us to move more fast paced.”

Scott understands that expectations will be immensely high in 2021-22, as Northwest returns all but one starter from last year’s team.

“We have a target on our back for sure,” Scott said. “Teams are preparing for us already and it’s just summer time. It’s going to be a lot tougher, but we’re ready to work. From our camps, we know that everyone just has to step up and if that happens, it’ll definitely be a game changer.”
