Located on Riverside Drive, with a deck that overlooks the Cumberland, Pbody’s has an enviable location. On a beautiful day, the deck is a relaxing place to escape for lunch or dinner, enjoying a cold beverage while watching the boats drift by.

Inside, the atmosphere is welcoming, as are the smiling faces that greet you. The walls are covered with 80’s movie posters, and the music is a fun mix of oldies.

As we pored over the extensive menu, our very courteous server helped by suggesting the Buffalo Shrimp ($7.99) as an appetizer. Deciding the abbreviated Lunch Menu was the easier way to maneuver the plethora of food options, my foodie friend went with the Fish and Chips ($7.99) while I ordered the Brisket with onion rings ($9.49).

Along with the crispy fried shrimp set in a pool of buffalo sauce, our server also brought a complimentary basket of homemade potato chips, lightly sprinkled with ranch dressing powder. The shrimp was freshly fried, and when we liberally dipped it in the sauce, it transformed into a nice spicy Buffalo Shrimp. The potato chips were something to crunch on to pass the time; I would not have missed them if they hadn’t been offered.

When the food arrived, I was impressed with the generous portion size, given these were off the Lunch Menu. The fish was obviously fresh from the fryer. My friend opted to eat “chips” (French fries) to give the fish a chance to cool off a bit. Thickly coating the fish, the beer batter breading was oozing with grease and yet the fish was rather dry. As my friend picked up a piece to share with me, we noticed the remaining pieces of fish were swimming in a puddle of grease.

The subtly smoky beef brisket was smothered in a tangy vinegar barbecue sauce. The onion rings, greasy and hot, had a mild flavor. The corn muffin was proclaimed by my Southern companion to be “sweet and very crumbly.”

As we discussed our meal experience, we agreed that we wanted to like it more than we did. Maybe drinking beer instead of water would have helped to offset the greasy food. Pbody’s claims the name “The Great American Grill.” I think next time we will order something from the grill.
