CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – One of Clarksville’s newest food establishments labels itself as a coffee house, but King Tut Coffee Co. & Healthy Food offers much more than a standard cappuccino.
My lunch partner and I expected to walk into a cafe-type setting, but we were pleasantly surprised by the extensive menu options, including a full breakfast spread, burgers, gyro plates, sandwiches, hummus, falafels, baklava, and more.
The restaurant itself is small and cozy with an interesting selection of ancient Egyptian-style decorations on display.
Owner Mahmoud Khedr, who is very friendly and generous, persuaded us both to try a cup of his signature Turkish coffee, which neither of us had ever sampled in the past. This was by far the strangest and most delectable cup of coffee I’ve ever tasted. The beverages were brought to our table in large mugs that had already been treated to some sugar. The coffee itself had a distinct spiced flavor and delivered quite a kick. This is one item any visitor to King Tut has to try.
We were a little overwhelmed by the size of the menu, but we landed on a plate of stuffed grape leaves with salad and the grilled chicken breast plate with rice and salad. Don’t be intimidated by the appearance of the grape leaves if you’ve never tried any before. They look a bit unappetizing, but these meat and rice filled treats are amazing.
The chicken breast was grilled to perfection and the rice was sticky and filling. The real standout, however, was the Greek-style salad topped with black olives and a light creamy dressing. It was the perfect complement to the rest of the meal.
The owner of the establishment, who prepares the food along with his brother, has an intimate knowledge of the dishes they prepare and is more than willing to offer suggestions to help you choose your new favorite item. We’ll definitely pay them another visit to pair some other meals with the Turkish coffee.
