When inquiring in casual conversation as to people’s favorite restaurants around Clarksville, the topic turned to sushi. These are people who, like me, don’t mind driving around town, checking out different sushi offerings. There are quite a few places in Clarksville from which to choose, but in recent conversations, Fuji Yama came up again and again, as did the word “fresh.” A couple of friends agreed to meet me for lunch at Fuji Yama so we could explore the sushi selection there together.

There is something about going out to eat with people who get excited about food. Everyone eats, but some people savor and relish what they are consuming in a way that is just fun. Seeing their eyes light up as they peruse the menu, listening to their exclamations of “Oh, this is so good!” and “You have to try this one!” makes me eager to join in the meal. I asked one of my friends who frequents Fuji Yama often to go ahead and order for me. He was more than delighted to do so.

We started off with the T-n-T, spicy tuna wrapped in tuna, each beautiful piece topped with a brightly contrasting slice of jalapeño and a drop of Sriracha. Vibrantly colored, the creamy tuna melted in my mouth with the panko in the spicy tuna adding a little crunch along with the crisp heat of the jalapeño. It was delightful. We all sat back and savored each bite of that appetizer.

My friend claimed that the Miso soup ($2.25) at Fuji Yama was the best in town, so we both had a bowl of that. I always enjoy the simplicity of Miso soup, with the tofu bits, scallions, and seaweed leaves. The others at the table went with salads, the avocado salad ($4.50) and the Kani salad ($6.00). The Kani salad is made up of crabmeat, cucumber, caviar and mayo on a bed of lettuce. With every bite, it was crunchy and creamy and sweet and tangy– definitely another favorite.

For our main course, we ordered the Black Pepper Tuna Roll–black pepper tuna, avocado & tempura flakes ($6.50), the Spicy Tuna Naruto–Spicy tuna, avocado, and flying fish roe wrapped w/ cucumber ($8.00), the avocado roll ($3.50) and the sweet potato roll ($4.50). (One of my friends is vegetarian; she was pleased with the variety available to her… and we all agreed the sweet potato roll was amazing.) We also enjoyed Salmon, Yellowtail Tuna, and Eel Nigiri—a type of sushi made of thin slices of raw fish over pressed vinegared rice. ($5.00 each)

“Fresh” is an essential description for a good sushi meal, and Fuji Yama definitely delivered.
