NASHVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Following Rep. Mark Green’s final day in office Sunday, the timeline for the election to fill his seat was announced today. The primary will be Tuesday, Oct. 7, and the general election will be Tuesday, Dec. 2.
Gov. Bill Lee has issued the official “Writs of Election” for a special election to fill the seat in the U.S. House of Representatives 7th Congressional District, a seat which was occupied by Green until his recent retirement, according to a press release from the Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett.

District 7 consists of 14 counties in Middle and West Tennessee, including Montgomery.
Information for candidates
The qualifying deadline (last chance to submit paperwork to run) is by noon of Aug. 12. The deadline to withdraw from the race is by noon of Aug. 15.
“Petitions can now be picked up from a county election office or the State Election Office, but must be submitted to the State Election Office,” according to Hargett.
For those interested in throwing their name in the hat, there are a few qualifications to meet. To hold the office of U.S. Representative, candidates must be at least 25 years old and a U.S. citizen for at least seven years.
To qualify in 7th Congressional District primary election there are two criteria candidates must meet:
- A resident of Tennessee for the past three years
- A resident in the county represented for at least one year preceding the election
Early voting dates and registration deadlines
To vote in the Oct. 7 primary, voters must register by Sept. 8 before early voting for the primary election begins on Sept. 17. Early voting for the primary ends on Oct. 2.
For the Dec. 2 general election, voters must register by Nov. 3. Early voting opens Nov. 12 and runs until Nov. 26.
