CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (ESPN CLARKSVILLE) – The Northeast Eagles football team took the field this week for spring practice. For the first time in three years, they start their 2017 campaign with a new head coach.
Chad Watson, who was hired a little over a month ago, has big plans for arguably one of the most talented teams in Montgomery County. And so far, the transition is right on schedule.
“I think the transition is going well so far. We’re learning to build relationships as a team and also as a coaching staff. I feel extremely fortunate that I have been able to surround myself with some top notch coaches,” Watson said.
Building chemistry and a culture doesn’t happen overnight. The Eagles are taking each day at a time to get where they want to be.
“As a team we are working hard to focus on controlling the things that we can control such as our attitude and our effort. As a coaching staff and also as a team we want to embrace each day as an opportunity to get better at something,” Watson said. “Starting out today, I felt like we were better flying around the field than we were yesterday. Our energy level and tempo was a lot better and that’s a compliment to our kids. I’m proud of those young men for their effort today.”
The Eagles hope to achieve more than just Xs and Os this spring. To coach Watson, there’s a bigger picture than just that.
“The main thing we hope to achieve this spring is for these young men and coaches to start to build relationships with each other. We also are working on evaluating the talent and find the right fit for each player that gives us the best chance to be successful on Friday night this fall,” he said.
The Eagles open up their 2017 season on the road at Central Hardin, KY on August 18.
