ERIN, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Thousands of people gathered in Erin on Saturday for the 64th annual Irish Day celebration, which wrapped up a week of activities.

The event featured a large carnival, around 40 food and beverage booths and more than 125 exhibitors offering a variety of items. Organizers said this year’s event drew 25,000 people.
The Irish Day celebration has been a longstanding tradition in Houston County. According to the Houston County Chamber of Commerce, the celebration began in 1963 when local physician Dr. O.S. Luton suggested honoring the area’s Irish heritage with a St. Patrick’s Day event.

The town of Erin itself was named by Irish railroad workers in the late 1850s who said the land reminded them of their home country, Ireland.
