CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – A proposed civic plaza for downtown Clarksville is getting a little closer to becoming a reality as workers are set to finish asbestos abatement in the old Bank of America building in the next few days.
That’s according to Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett who said they knew about the asbestos going into the demolition of the building and the asbestos removal was part of the initial bidding on the project.
The block under demolition downtown is surrounded by 2nd, Legion, 3rd, and Main Streets. Along with the bank structure, the former site of the Better Business Bureau and the Regions Bank parking lot are also part of the demolition process.
Durrett talked about the timeline on the demolition. “Probably the middle to the latter part of next week, could be the first of the following week we expect to see the demo work start. It will probably take them 10 days to two weeks, something like that,” said Durrett.
When it comes to the civic plaza project, Durrett added that a meeting is planned with the consultants on the project, Hodgson Douglas and Montgomery County Commissioners and other officials to look over design schematics.
At this time no actual design for the civic plaza has been decided on. Durrett said he believes when the civic plaza is finished it will be a destination place for downtown Clarksville, it’s going to attract a lot of people and it’s one of the steps we need to take to revitalize our downtown.
