Doris LaVaughn Backfisch died October 24, 2013, at her residence. She was born April 13, 1930, in Clay City, IN, to Fred and Anna West Backfisch. She attended Union Country School until Fifth Grade, when transferred to Clay City High School, graduating class of 1948.
Doris worked for 21 years as a waitress for Jean’s Cafe in Clay City. She retired in 1995 from Luther Accounting Agency, in Clay City, after 19 years.
She had been a member of the Everwelcome Home Ec Club and the Clay City Women’s Business Club. She was also a member of the Former First Bretheren Church for more than 50 years; now a member of Madison Street Church of Christ.
She enjoyed reading, watching basketball games on TV, and local news on channel 2. She also loved to travel and had taken several tours that were sponsored by channel 2, with Tom McClanahan as the tour host on the trips.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 1, 2013 at 2:00 PM, at Shoppenhorst Funeral Home, 301 E. 8th Street, Clay City, IN 47841.
She is survived by cousin Marlene Dallas and family, of Clarksville, TN, where she has lived since moving here in 2006 to be near her cousin and family, several other cousins and their families, and a host of friends in Clay City, Chicago, IL, and Lenexa, KS. She was predeceased by her parents and grandparents.
Pallbearers will be Tony and Jesse Miner, Vic and Bill Morris, Randy Staley, and Tom Dallas.
